Length and Route of Tour de France 2022

The 108th 2022 Tour de France route will cover 3,470 kilometers. The race will take place between Nice and Paris. The Tour de France 2022 will feature four summit finishes, three hilly stages, nine flat stages, and a time trial.

The opening 13-kilometer time trial in Copenhagen is one of the 109th Tour de France standouts, which begins on Thursday in Paris. A stage on Paris-Roubaix cobblestones, a mountain finish at La Planche des Belles Filles, a return to the legendary switchbacks of L’Alpe d’Huez, more peak finishes in the Pyrénées, and a final 40-kilometer time trial.

The Tour de France route shows to be well-balanced. The race includes 53 kilometers of time trials at the start and finishes, with possibilities for attacks and gains in the Vosges, Alps, and the Pyrenees. They must be all-around cyclists strong enough to compete in echelons and racing on the cobbled Wallers-Arenberg stage in Denmark and northern France.

Tadej Pogaar, winner of the TDF 2021 alongside new world champion Julian Alaphilippe and green jersey winner Mark Cavendish in 2021, participated in the route confirmation at the Palais des Congrès in Paris.

Following a few sprints in the first week, the Manxman and his competitors will face the Alps and Pyrenees before arriving in Paris on July 24. It is based on the Tour de France 2022 schedule.

The event organizer, ASO, stated the importance of focusing on the race route rather than the riders, as was customary. Christian Prudhomme provided an amusing overview of the Tour de France starting lineup before revealing details about the 2022 race.

History

Tadej Pogaar is the current Tour de France champion, having defended his win in a row in 2021. Back in 2020, at the age of 21, he became the race’s second-youngest winner, trailing only Firmin Labot in 1904.

Pogaar broke the race’s Ineos/Sky stranglehold. The British team won seven of the past eight Tour de Francia with Egan Bernal, Geraint Thomas, Bradley Wiggins, and four-time winner Chris Froome. With a win in 2014, Vincenzo Nibali, then riding for Astana, would be the other rider to end the British squad’s Tour de France standings.

Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Jacques Anquetil, and Miguel Indurain currently hold the Tour wins record with five titles each.

In the last two years, Peter Sagan has been defeated in the battle for the green jersey, a modern rarity. In 2020, he was defeated by Sam Bennett after a race-long battle, while Mark Cavendish won together with four stages in 2021. On the other hand, Sagan still keeps the all-time green jersey lead with seven victories in nine appearances. Erik Zabel has six jerseys, one more than Sean Kelly.

Richard Virenque holds the Tour de France results in a record for most polka dot jersey wins with seven. Pogaar and Rafa Majka are the only current riders with two king of the mountains titles.
